Rain Day Festival
In the 1890s, a local farmer named Caleb Ely mentioned to the Waynesburg pharmacist, William Allison, that it always seemed to rain on his birthday, July 29. That comment inspired Allison to keep an annual record of the rainfall on July 29. The record continued with Allison’s brother, Albert, and then Bryon Daily. A tradition grew to bet a hat with a national or regional celebrity on will it rain in Waynesburg on July 29 or not.
Today we celebrate the tradition with a festival in the heart of Waynesburg, PA. Learn more at: www.raindayfestival.com.
