The Anchor Stores of Downtown Waynesburg
In downtown Waynesburg, the genteel storefronts of High Street never stay empty for long. New shops can be an exciting find as entrepreneurs try their hand at serving up that new something that the public is eager to sample.
The space that used to house Coach’s Café on High Street in Waynesburg across from PNC Bank, is reopening on Friday, December 11 as Fruition Bowls and Brews, with acai bowls, artisan toast, whole food snacks, smoothies, ground fresh coffee and espresso.
Old standbys sometimes move locations to put a fresh spin on their business model. Photographer Ben McMillan moved his “we love what we do” studio from the west side of the Greene County Courthouse to east side near The Locker Room, where McMillen Photography continues to offer up wedding and special occasion photo services.
But it’s the anchor stores of downtown Waynesburg that have been around for decades that have the power to draw back fans every season to shop for the quality goods they are known for.
Top on the list for longevity is the Fashion Shoppe – “a unique boutique.” In the family for 80 years and counting, the shop is tucked beside the glamorous facade of the historic and retired Waynesburg Theater. The theatre’s high signage from the days of old lets you know you’ve arrived and what to expect inside.
Started in 1940 by Fannie Rinehart Whitlatch, the shop for those with a taste for fashion, has third and fourth generation family members still on the floor daily. The name brands offered today are the must haves for quality shoppers – Brighton, Vera Bradley, Tribal, Miss Me, as well as Nora Fleming. A variety of the latest products include fashion apparel, bags, accessories and a line of home goods.
Associates are ready to help you pick out that perfect gift. Gift certificates are also available. For those needing “a little more” help with shopping, the business has added special features including private shopping, virtual shopping, curbside pick-up and local delivery. Call the Fashion Shoppe 724-627-7407 to schedule your appointment.
It’s hard to miss Mickey’s Men’s Store sitting on the corner of Washington Street across from the Greene County Courthouse. Its outdoor signs say it all – the Bruno family has been serving the hard working people of the area and beyond for over 50 years.
Step inside to a veritable department store of men’s and women’s apparel for the blue-collar worker or the rural adventurer. Shop for good and lasting name brands such as Ariat, Levis, Carolina, Timberland, Matterhorn, Muck and of course the perennially popular and dependably durable Carhartt line of clothing and outerwear. Dress and safety toe boots have their own department upstairs and those working in the hazard industries will appreciate the fire resistant FR clothing.
Like nearly every other shop in Waynesburg, shopping at Mickey’s Men’s Store is just a click away on Facebook.
