Make Your Own Presents - and Enjoy the Drive!
By Colleen Nelson
“Shop Scenic” could well become the catch phrase for Greene County when the holiday season consists of driving country roads to find that perfect gift. Unique shops stuffed with handcrafted items, delicious eats and bottles of wine are waiting for the day-tripper who is willing to imagine that Greene County is a super mall with miles of rural scenery to be enjoyed between shops.
For those with a hankering to make their own unique gift, or give a gift that someone can finish and call their own, there are three shops to stop at, from Rogersville to Jefferson to Waynesburg. Or whatever order your day might allow!
Looking for a piece of poured ceramic to paint, then bring back to be glazed and fired? Gloria’s Ceramics and Greene Gifts in Rogersville is the place to go. Owner Patty Rohanna has a wide range of molds to choose from for every holiday theme and every decorative mode.
For do it yourselfers, she mixes up the glazes and prints detailed instructions for the ceramic figurines, plates, ornaments and cultural object d’ art she has poured, bisque fired and ready to go. Her Facebook page response time is fast and friendly. And her many customers who are students have become friends who love making their own personalized renditions of some of the classic decorative objects of our time. Remember that ceramic Christmas tree with the tiny lights that your grandmother got out every year and sat on the sideboard? You can make one of your own, or purchase the kit to do it and gift someone the childhood memories to life. When you see the object that makes you feel just right from Patty’s selections, you’ll know it.
The old floral shop in Jefferson is now the place to turn lumber into awesome whatnots, thanks to the ladies of Lumber Ladies. This dynamic duo joined forces to open a shop to make wooden ornaments, wall hangings, furnishings and a host of other woody signs of the times for the home and for giving. If you’re ready to take home a craft to complete, go to the Lumber Ladies Facebook page and make first contact. They are there to help you make it right for the holidays.
Paint your own ornament kits for the crafty friends in your life are also available at Kiln to Table in Waynesburg. The kit includes four handmade ornaments, paint, glitter, brushes and hangers. Due to indoor dining restrictions, Kiln to Table has converted its indoor space into a mini-gallery of holiday gifts, handmade by local and regional artists. But not to worry there is still a full menu, including killer coffee and if the weather is right you can still sit outside and nosh.
