Historical and Cherished Jacktown Fair
One of Greene County, Pennsylvania’s historical and cherished annual events is returning very soon, and it’s “Fair” to say that it is a weeklong traditional celebration that visitors across the nation would greatly enjoy.
The traditional Jacktown Fair – which is held in the picturesque area of Wind Ridge in the western end of the county – is steeped in a rich, deep and very proud agricultural heritage that dates all the way back to 1866.
Since its humble yet proud beginnings, the traditional event’s renowned slogan has been “You Can’t Die Happy ‘Til You’ve Been to the Jacktown Fair!” And that slogan could not be more accurate.
This Fair offers much more than the traditional offerings of rides, games and food … it offers a special sampling of rural Americana that should be experienced by everyone.
From the beloved parade that kicks off the festivities to the Miss Jacktown Fair Queen and Princess contests, from the traditional smells of cotton candy and freshly popped popcorn to the numerous 4-H exhibits and contests, and from the excitement of the wildly popular demolition derby to the numerous musical performances from a wide array of talented performers, there is simply no shortage of fun for everyone at the Jacktown Fair.
It is the agricultural aspect of the annual tradition that truly makes the Jacktown Fair so special. Throughout the entire year, adolescents work tirelessly raising their livestock, spending months, weeks, days and hours preparing them for the traditional show and sale.
These hard working youths are tremendously dedicated to their animals for this monumental event, in the hopes of raising money for their respective futures. Experiencing the passion of these youths who are so committed to 4-H and agriculture is worth the small price of admission alone. However, the Jacktown Fair has so much more to offer.
But really, this fair is so much more than what typical small-town fairs have to offer. Visiting the Jacktown Fair is like stepping back in a simpler and more pleasant time and witnessing first-hand the importance of family values, hard work and community spirit.
I have had the pleasure of attending the Jacktown Fair for more than 30 years. Although I always enjoyed the event, it wasn’t until 2019 when I realized just how special it truly is.
My relatives from a large city were visiting us that summer, and I asked them to join me in going to the Fair. After watching the parade, the Miss Jacktown Fair Queen pageant and a few of the 4-H exhibits, my relatives said they couldn’t believe how much fun they had and how strong the community spirit is. Then, they said they couldn’t wait to come back to Wind Ridge in the near future to experience the Jacktown Fair again.
Folks, you just cannot buy that kind of advertising.
So, if it’s true that you can’t die until you’ve been there, then what are you waiting for? Come to beautiful, rural Greene County on July 16-20, 2024 for the annual Jacktown Fair and see for yourself.
