Be sure to stop at Rices Landing, where the urban legend of stovepipe, the spirit of a man beheaded by a train, stirs up activity near the W.A. Young & Sons Foundry and Machine Shop. Another urban legend claims that if you travel along the stretch of Sugar Camp Road, you will feel the presence of an unknown entity holding your hand.
Accounts of UFO and Bigfoot sightings are frequent throughout the county, and several reports point to a rich plethora of Native American history that has left the land haunted by the spirits of those passed. The Crow Sisters were massacred by Native Americans near the Crow Rock Monument in Richhill Township. Near this area, a West Greene school bus driver has reportedly witnessed the sounds of someone coming up behind her parked bus and screaming. Others have seen creatures that resemble a baboon with red eyes.
The Greene County Historical Society and Museum is another hot spot for paranormal activity. Previously known as the Greene County Home for the indigent, it was the site of many tragic occurrences. In practice, the facility was much like an asylum, similar to state hospitals in the region. Several employees and volunteers on the museum’s property witness unexplained footsteps, rearranged objects, and even full body apparitions.
