The Most Haunted County in America
The far southwestern corner of Pennsylvania looks on the surface to be a pleasant rolling, river-cut landscape carpeted with vegetation and trees. But underneath is a bloody history and a supernatural reality brimming with ghosts, aliens, and unknown creatures.
Kevin Paul, a native of Greene County, and paranormal researcher, Rosemary Ellen Guiley take you deep into Greene County’s dark and unexplored corners to uncover a twilight world that exists alongside of us in Haunted Hills & Hollows: What Lurks in Greene County Pennsylvania. Their novel published in 2018, explores true stories of drifting ghosts, strange alien beings, Bigfoot, dogmen, Lizard Man, black “blobs,” winged humanoids, spirits of the land, mysterious black-eyed people and more, all of whom roam the suburbs and wilds of Greene County.

Excerpts from Kevin’s novel have been accumulated to create a list of haunted Greene County sites perfect for visitors and residents to explore. Embark upon a chilling investigation of what has been deemed the most haunted county in America.
The sites will have you exploring the entirety of the county, with active locations in almost every township. Enjoy the country scenery while you drive from location to location and read up on first-hand accounts of hauntings from local Greene County residents featured in Kevin’s book.
Be sure to stop at Rices Landing, where the urban legend of stovepipe, the spirit of a man beheaded by a train, stirs up activity near the W.A. Young & Sons Foundry and Machine Shop. Another urban legend claims that if you travel along the stretch of Sugar Camp Road, you will feel the presence of an unknown entity holding your hand.
Accounts of UFO and Bigfoot sightings are frequent throughout the county, and several reports point to a rich plethora of Native American history that has left the land haunted by the spirits of those passed. The Crow Sisters were massacred by Native Americans near the Crow Rock Monument in Richhill Township. Near this area, a West Greene school bus driver has reportedly witnessed the sounds of someone coming up behind her parked bus and screaming. Others have seen creatures that resemble a baboon with red eyes.
The Greene County Historical Society and Museum is another hot spot for paranormal activity. Previously known as the Greene County Home for the indigent, it was the site of many tragic occurrences. In practice, the facility was much like an asylum, similar to state hospitals in the region. Several employees and volunteers on the museum’s property witness unexplained footsteps, rearranged objects, and even full body apparitions.
These stories are just few of many that can be explored in depth in Kevin’s book or by experiencing the sites first hand for yourself.
