Coal Country is Back!
By Olivia Kiger
Celebrate a proud Greene County tradition at the 70th Annual Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Show on August 16-23, 2025. The King Coal Association has organized the event each year since 1953 when they were founded. This nonprofit, weeklong festival honors coal miners and the coal industry that helped shape Southwestern Pennsylvania, with events that celebrate the region’s deep coal mining roots. View Schedule
The week kicks off on Saturday morning with the 31st Annual King Coal/Sara L. Ruth Memorial Golf Outing at the Carmichaels Golf Club.
The Battle of the Barrel takes place Sunday morning! Come watch local fire departments go head-to-head in a tug-of-war-style contest where high-pressure water is sprayed from fire hoses to push a hanging barrel toward the opponent’s side. In the evening, swing by Carmichaels Area High School where ten young ladies from ten different school districts will compete to become the 70th Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Queen.

Carnival rides, food vendors, bingo, and live DJ entertainment will officially kick off Tuesday evening and continue each night throughout the rest of the festival.
The 57th Children’s Pet Parade will take place on Wednesday evening. Watch as children and their pets dress up and parade around for everyone to see!

Join the festivities Thursday evening as the 51st Gideon Memorial Decorated Bicycle Parade starts the night off. See imaginative and elaborate designs from both kids and adults as they show off their decked-out bikes. Shortly after, enjoy a magical meet-and-greet with your favorite Disney Princesses and SHREK.
Dance it out on Friday night with the Classics Rock Band, performing a lively mix of rock ‘n’ roll and nostalgic oldies live at the Fire Hall grounds.

On Saturday morning, come one and come all to the King Coal Charles Workman Memorial Auto and Motorcycle Show at Wana B Park! Admire classic and custom vehicles that span generations but still shine like new.

Following the car show, vehicles will participate in the Annual King Coal Charles Workman Memorial Auto and Motorcycle Parade. If you didn’t catch the car show, this is your chance to see the lineup roll through town. Right after the automotive parade, the annual King Coal Parade will begin, a community favorite featuring floats, marching bands, and more.
Later that evening, enjoy a live musical performance by Nuther Round Band at the Fire Hall grounds. After the concert, a spectacular fireworks show will bring the Coal Show to a close. The viewing area will be at the Carmichaels Area School District Football Field. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the show!
