A Day of Planes, Classics & Family Fun at Greene County Airport
Get ready to take flight or start your engines on Saturday, August 15, 2026, as Greene County Airport Wings & Wheels returns to the Greene County Airport. Hosted by S.O.A.R. of Greene County, this year’s Aviation Day has expanded with the addition of a new classic car show. The event brings together aviation enthusiasts, classic car lovers, families, and history buffs for a full day of aircraft, automobiles, hands-on activities, and family fun.
From 10am to 4pm, visitors can experience an exciting mix of aircraft, automobiles, and hands-on activities. Guests can stroll the airport grounds while exploring static aircraft displays, getting an up-close look at a variety of planes, admiring beautifully restored classic cars, and learning about the stories behind them. Flight simulators will also be available, giving visitors of all ages the chance to experience what it’s like to sit in the cockpit and take to the skies without ever leaving the ground. Airplane rides will also be available throughout the day for a suggested donation, giving guests the opportunity to see Greene County from above while supporting S.O.A.R. of Greene County. Throughout the day, local vendors will offer food, refreshments, and shopping opportunities, making it easy to spend the entire afternoon enjoying everything the event has to offer.
Families can also enjoy plane rides, plane train rides, and a variety of kid-friendly activities throughout the day. One of the event’s highlights is the Young Eagles program, which provides free introductory airplane rides for youth ages 8–17, giving young visitors the chance to experience the excitement of flying. The Young Eagles program launched in 1992 and has provided millions of young visitors with their first airplane ride by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), inspiring countless future pilots, mechanics, engineers, and aviation professionals. Per Experimental Aircraft Association nationwide rules, parents and legal guardians may not accompany children during young eagles flight but must remain at the airport to complete the registration process before takeoff. Offered in partnership with the Experimental Aircraft Association and local EAA Chapter 842, every Young Eagles flight is made possible by volunteer pilots dedicated to inspiring the next generation of aviators.
History enthusiasts won’t want to miss one of the event’s most meaningful attractions, the “Spirit of Freedom,” a C-54 aircraft dedicated to honoring the Berlin Airlift of 1948–1949. Visitors can tour the aircraft, step inside, and learn about its remarkable service history. Originally taking flight in 1945, the aircraft served in numerous roles, including support missions during the Korean War, before eventually being retired from military service. Touring the “Spirit of Freedom” offers a unique opportunity to experience an important chapter of aviation history up close and gain a greater appreciation for the aircraft and the people who served aboard it.
Adding to the excitement this year is the new classic car show, where rows of polished classics, restored cruisers, vintage trucks, and custom builds will line the airport alongside historic aircraft. Vehicle registration is $10 from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., with awards presented for 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and People’s Choice. Visitors can admire the vehicles, meet fellow car enthusiasts, and enjoy the unique combination of aviation and automotive history.
